Review : Chapter 8 Networking and Digital Communications

In the world of computers, networking is the practice of linking two or more computing devices together for the purpose of sharing data. Networks are built with a mix of computer hardware and computer software.

Area Networks

Networks can be categorized in several different ways. One approach defines the type of network according to the geographic area it spans.
Local area networks (LANs), for example, typically span a single home, school, or small office building, whereas wide area networks (WANs), reach across cities, states, or even across the world. The Internetis the world's largest public WAN.

There are some networking technology that well known in this era :
  • Local area network (LAN) : computers are physically close to each other, usually in the same buliding
  • Wireless network : Equipped devices to the internet
  • Metropolitan Area Network (MAN) links two or more LANs within a city
  • Wide Area Network (WAN) extends over a long distance. Data transmitted over common pathwayas called a backbone.
  • Global Positioning System (GPS): GPS receiver can use signals broadcast by three or four visible satelites to determine its position.
  • Automated Teller Machine (ATM)
  • Modem: a hardware device that connects a computer’s serial port to a telephone line. Modem transmission speed measured in bits per second (bps)
  • Bluetooth: another type of wireless technology, that can communicate each other in short range position like in the room or something .
  • Communication software
Having a network is essential for managing your entrepreneurial idea and you want the fastest network and a wireless network would also function very well. A wireless network could function very well with the actual scanners in that they could be hooked up to the network. This would be functional in installing updates in software or new features to the scanner to help them perform better.
